Each month at work we have a little celebration for the lovely ladies who had a birthday that month. Everyone has someone they are assigned to, and as such is in charge of a birthday treat and a card. I was assigned a March birthday and I am taking my duties very seriously :)
As always, I was happy for an excuse to make a birthday card. I think this one is particularly cute if I don’t say so myself!
As for the birthday treat, I wanted to try my hand at cupcakes. I’ve made cupcakes before, but in terms of decorating I’ve generally slapped some icing on the top, sprinkled a few sprinkles and was done. This time I wanted to make the pretty kind! You know, the ones with the twirly, pretty-looking icing? Those ones.
I looked around online for a bit and found a great recipe and video tutorial about how to decorate cupcakes. If you’re interested, check it out here!
Aren’t they b-e-a-utiful?
And there you have it. Happy birthday to all you March birthdays!
Why? Because they add such a personal touch to a gift and let’s face it: they’re fun to make! Plus, I have a moderate to severe obsession with Dollar Stores, which always have such cute little decals and embellishments. Seriously, if there is a Dollar Store within a visible range, watch out! (Much to my hubby’s chagrin. He waits in the car.)
As for materials, I’m a big fan of the rub-on alphabets. I’m less keen on the sticker letters, but sometimes they can be cute. With alphabet decals, sticker or rub-on, I’ve learned that you’ve really gotta plan your message so you can ensure you have enough ‘a’s, ‘r’s and ‘y’s, etc! I’ve become a little creative with altering letters when I haven’t planned properly…
Who would know that in Cynthia’s birthday card, the ‘y’ in her name was actually a ‘g’, the ‘h’ was a ‘b’ and the ‘a’ was a ‘d’?! (Catch that?)
#1: for my hubs
#2: my friend's birthday
#3: for my bestie, who is amazing!
I’m also a big fan of the sticky pieces that make images pop out. I’m not sure what they’re called… sticky squares? Puffy squares? I dunno. These:

I love ‘em. Instead of gluing an image right on the card, by using some o’ these they add some dimension. They really make a huge difference!
The year of handmade cards is going well… 5 for 5! :)
On Sunday, my nephew turns 3. How did that happen??! My husband and I started dating about a month before he was born, so he continues to be a visual representation of how long we have been together. At risk of sounding like a biased auntie… (ah, who am I kidding?!) he is the brightest, cutest, creativest little boy ever! I made this card for him to go along with his present. Card number 2 of my year of handmade cards! (Number 1 was for my sister-in-law, but I forgot to take a picture. Whoops.)
Happy birthday to my sweet little nephew!
